I think this is a bug in the Excel. It appears at least with Excel 2000 and
2002.
I tried to find reports about similar symptoms in various forums and in
Internet, without success. This is obviously the case because the real origin
of bug is not easy to trace.
Symptoms:
- If one has on a worksheet some cells formatted with a (user-defined) style
and he uses then the command Edit/Clear/Formats to remove formats from all of
those cells, it removes also style of those cells if that has a similar start
portion of its name than some other style and that portion is followed by an
underscore plus some end portion.
For instance, if we have two styles:
style1
style1_sum
Then if the latter style "style1_sum" is used as described above, it will be
removed as described later.
The former style "style1" will not be removed if it will be used in similar
manner.
- After the previous action the style style1_sum can still be seen in
Format/Style… dialog but if one saves the workbook and the reopens it, the
style "style1_sum" is away!
The above phenomenon appears also with VBA programming using the Range
object method ClearFormats. There it can cause many tricky bugs!
