clearing words with mouse writing over

I was typing a document, but when I was using my mouse to highlight words and
then delete them by writing over the words, I ran into a problem. Now when I
highlight and hit a space bar or type more the words stay, and do not delete.
this is happened before for me, I know ther is a way to fix it but I cannot
recall how. does anyone know how I fix this? its really annoying

Tools > options > edit > check typing replaces selection (there's an
equivalent in Word options in Word 2007)
