Cleartype - please help ?

I

Ian

Hi,

I run Office 2003 and IE7. I attended a webex and since then cleartype is
all over the place (IE7, Word, Excel Outlook) and I can't turn it off. I've
tried the internet options advanced settings and the control panel settings
all with no luck even after a few re-starts. I’d rather not “tune†it, I’d
rather turn off. Please help. This is driving me crazy. Thanks in advance for
any suggestions. Ian

Are you SURE it is cleartype that has appeared? To be honest, my first
thought was WHY would anyone want to remove clear type...it's so
nice/cool. I personally love it.

Since it was a WebEx meeting you attended...having obviously had to
install their software, you might want to search the web for any other
"victims" of the change to see if any solutions are out there. I have
a feeling it's not really "clear type" and has nothing to do with
anything done by Windows or Office.

I actually just did google it. Although there are NO references to
webex and cleartype issues, there are many display bugs and problems.

Maybe you can post or explain what you are seeing so we have a better
idea of what you really mean is happening?

I like it too but I need to disable it for screen shots. ClearType makes
things look better on your screen but when you have ClearType enabled your
screen shots can look horrible on someone else's screen.

So if I don't keep ClearType turned off I might forget and then my screen
shots end up making me look like I don't know what I'm doing. <g>

Humm...I've not noticed that type of problem and I do tons of screen
shots and screen videos??? I'll have to check it out once to see if I
see much of a difference. Of course...it COULD be my eyes?

(BTW, chick...what's with the "co-author" status...I thought you were
tech ed for Steph? Humm...I may have to talk to Herb about this.<eg>)

I've noticed it (been meaning to tell you about it but I keep
forgetting.;-) ) Here's an example of some screen shots with ClearType
enabled:
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=771

Do you see the gray haze around the text? It's very noticeable on a white
background That's caused by ClearType. The shame of the matter is there are
a LOT of books with really bad screen shots because the author didn't know
about ClearType. :-(

Yep, I was the technical reviewer for "Advanced Microsoft Office Documents
2007 Edition Inside Out" and I'm co-authoring "Microsoft Office Word 2007
Inside Out". (I've been a very busy girl for the last year or so. <grin>)

Actually...the haze there is caused by the fact that I've reduced the
screen shot down by 20% within SnagIt and then sharpen the image by
80%...as I demonstrate, live, in this video lesson on SnagIt screen
shots.

Ahh...yes, I didn't notice the WORD title versus the OFFICE one. Good
for you...congrats! Guess Herb's off the hook with me riding his coat
tails too closely!<smirk> (Although he doesn't need it...his book was
very fun to read, as well as very informative. So you'd better not
only be very technically accurate with your book...but also
entertaining!<smirk>)

I can't see the video (looks like your site is down again), but I suspect
what have is a live demonstration of what happens when you have ClearType
enabled. ;-)

When you sharpen a screen shot taken when ClearType is enabled what you are
doing is enhancing the colors added by ClearType. It will start looking like
a rainbow of colors if you sharpen it too much. It has nothing to do with
reducing the screen shot and sharpening the image.

Yeah, that server went belly up the other day...so although it's up
now, it's up/down a bit as they move it to a spanking new server.

Well...I guess it's my eyes, cos' it doesn't look bad to me.
