Click and Drag

J

Judy Chucker

When I select a word, release the clicker, and then try to click and drag
the word, it acts as if I never released the clicker before trying to drag
because it continues to select the words that the arrow is moving across.
And, of course, the originally selected word doesn't drag.

Please help!! This is my thesis (so what else is new).

Hello Judy,

I can't think of a solution yet, and have to go out (it's Sunday morning in
Australia) but it would help anyone else in suggesting a solution if you
could post back with details of the version of Word you are using (including
the number of the last update), the Mac OS version, and the model of your
Mac.

Cheers,

Hi Judy -

Word>Preferences>Edit, makes sure there is a check in the box to allow Drag
& Drop Text Editing. Also, make sure the 'green light' for EXT on the doc
window Status Bar *isn't* green. If it is, click it to turn it off - it's
used for EXTending selections.

You are so right, Clive! Sorry that I overlooked that info. Here you go:
Ibook G4
Mas OS 10.4.7
Word for Mac 2004 v. 11.2

I hope that covers it!

There you go, Judy in Minnesota isn't Bob marvellous? Frankly, I wouldn't
have thought of that in years, and I wasted your time asking for Word
version etc was thinking of potentially far deeper problems.

Cheers,

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but I had checked the EXT and the preferences,
and both were as they should have been. Did I mention that after running
Disk Utilities Permission Repair (or whatever it's called), then restarted,
that click-and-drag worked? It's just that if that was a coincidence, the
next time it happens, will the same trick work??

P.S. Bob is still marvelous.

Hello Judy,

It's quite possible Repair Permissions fixed it, although we haven't had
this reported in the past. However, Word never does lose its power to
perplex...

If it happens again, you know where to post!

Cheers,

Perplexed of Canberra ;-)

Hi Judy:

If it happens again, log off then log back on again. That often fixes user
interface glitches like this :)

Cheers

In fact, just quitting the offending app & relaunching may fix the
intermittent occurrence, but if it happens frequently it could also be
system-related - such as RAM or OS.

And another late entry - Your second post indicated Office 11.2, so if
that's *really* where you are it would be a good idea to install the most
current updates. Do 11.2.5 _first_ then 11.2.6 :)
