Clicking Arrow in "OPEN" dialogue box freezes application

This just started happening. When I attempt to open a document using the
File Menu, I click on "OPEN" which brings up a menu/dialogue box. If I click
on the arrow next to the single box at the top that shows a filname to bring
up a drop-down list, the entire system freezes and I have to use the
Ctl/alt/del function to get out. (Quite troubling!) If, instead, I click on
the actual file name in the larger box, the file or document opens okay.

Any suggestions? (This does not happen in other applications, other than
Word 2003. It does happen with other "boxes" that show an arrow for a
drop-down list.)

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, left-click on
Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped drives that are not
currently available.
