Clicking on word documents does not open my word 2003 application

This function used to operate until today.
Yesterday I installed the microsoft desktop indexing programme - could this
be the problem, and if so how do I fix it without uninstalling the desktop
indexing?

It could be the indexing program corrupted your file associations for
Word. To recreate them go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
