Clicking the Wordpad or Calc button in the toolbar sends/receives

I am using Win 98SE and Office 97, however, if I am on-
line with Earthlink, and use the Office 97 toolbar (on
which I have the calculator button) when I click on it, it
will send 2592 bytes and receive 125,026 bytes each time!
And there are no browsers, e-mail or anything else I can
see running. And the calculator will NOT come up until
all 125K are received. If I hang up during the transfer,
the calculator comes up immediately. If I use Start, and
Run calc, the calculator comes up immediately even if I am
on-line. It transmits and receives also for Wordpad,
however, NOT for Word and Excel. Since I can't see what
is received and sent, it worries me. AND, where is it
going? If anyone has an answer to this PLEASE answer me
directly--and soon!

Thanks! Ron Wheeler (e-mail address removed)

I solved my own problem. It was checking crl.verisign.com
which is the Certificate Revocation List. It has always
been doing that, but on Jan. 7 Verisign changed something
and now it takes MUCH longer. Until they fix that, go to
IE and the Tools drop down menu, Advanced tab, and scroll
to the Security section at the bottom and uncheck the box
that says "Check for publisher's certificate revocation"
