I tried all your solutions
repaired / reset the permissions
moved preferences forcing WORD to make new ones
moved "Normal" template so wword made a new one

I also looked at "Diagnose your problem" but couldn't see anything
there which was helpful.

Could there be a bug (programming oversight) in the programme itself?

IT IS A PROGRAMMING PROBLEM !!
It is a problem between "Clip Art" and "International Preferences".
Changing first language to "English" cures the problem. My first
language is set to "Gàidhlig" - then various brands of English - then
"Gaeilge". Language choice in "International Preferences" sets the web
site language selection in "Safari", hence the main reason (but not
the only reason) for setting preferences this way.

So what's the work around - is it 10.3.9 and Apple - or Microsoft?
It's a pain resetting preferences and restarting to use a feature of
WORD.
I could log in as a second user using "fast switching" - but that
won't give me access to all my documents etc.

Any ideas?

No, sorry. But thanks for posting, I'll make sure this gets passed on a bug
if the lurkers don't catch it.

By the way, you are aware Office 2004 comes with a lot less clip art than
previous versions, right? The files should still be accessible and if you
cursor through them in the Finder, the preview works. It's a toss-up which
way would be less of a hassle.
