ClipArt --- Illegal Operation

G

Gekko

greetings to all,

I installed a new printer just now and thought I would try out its
colour printing capabilities..... my first thought was to fire up Word
and grab something from ClipArt and see how it came out.
But, each time I went to the Insert Menu & then Pictures & then ClipArt, I
got the usual "this program has performed an illegal operation" etc etc.
I tried it twice in Word the zipped off over to Excel to try the same, but I
got exactly the same problem there too.
Any thoughts anyone?

Btw, I grabbed a WordArt thingy next and had no problems at all,
including printing.

The main catalog, Mstore10.mgc, may be corrupted.

The Mstore10.mgc file stores properties about clips that you import into Clip
Organizer. Clip properties include information such as keywords, categories, and
thumbnail previews.

Compact the main catalog. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point
to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Clip
Organizer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Compact.
If compacting the main catalog does not eliminate the error, create a new main
catalog by renaming the old one. Note that when you rename the file, you lose
access to all clip property information that you added.

TIP: Always rename files instead of deleting them. That way you can return to
your original files if the procedure does not work.

To rename the catalog, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Search, and
then click For Files or Folders.
2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type mstore10.mgc. Click Search
Now.
3. Right-click your Mstore10.mgc file, click Rename on the shortcut menu, and
change the three-letter file name extension from .mgc to .old.

NOTE: If your computer is used by more than one person or has more than one
profile, be careful to rename only the Mstore10.mgc file that is in a subfolder
of your personal user folder (the folder with your login ID). If you are on a
network, ask for help from your network administrator if you do not understand
how to find the correct file.
4. Run Clip Organizer.

Clip Organizer creates a new Mstore10.mgc file automatically.
After Clip Organizer creates the new catalog file, you must re-import any custom
clips that you previously imported, and retype any clip property information
that you manually created.

Hi Mary, & thanks for the input.

Your info looks great except for a few hitches, they are as follows::
1)in the 'start, programs, microsoft office tools' I dont have a link to
"clip organiser". The only things I see are "snapshot viewer, language,
&
shortcut bar".
2)I have searched my whole computer, every partition, and I have no
file named Mstore 10.mgc. (I also tried Mstore10.mgc)(wasnt sure if
there was a space between the mstore & 10)
3)I dont have any imported files relating to clips whatsoever, perhaps this
is why this file doesnt exist on my comp'.

The problem does seem to be 'central' in nature by way of the fact that
excel exhibits the same symptom. I guess this means it is an msOffice
problem. (btw, I have office2000, O/S is Win98SE)
So, I guess the next thing for me is to ask if you have any other ideas?

Well I guess I should have asked if you really meant the Gallery.

It could be as simple as re-registering your Gallery, find Artgalry.exe, it is
in a folder similar to this:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ARTGALRY
Double-click the "Artgalry.exe" a message should come up saying it now
registered.

If that doesn't work, rename the Artgal50.mmc to Artgal50.old. It is in a folder
similar to this: (hidden)
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Catalog

If that doesn't work, rename the Artgal50.mmc to Artgal50.old. It is in a folder

I am having internet connect problems at the moment too,,,, so I have
to type this quick before I lose my connection again.

Mary, what is renaming the above mentioned folder going to produce?
Am I supposed to reboot after a rename, or fire up Word, or....
(all folders I know about are un-hidden on my comp',,, I like to know
whats where and whats what.)
I've been to Artgalry.exe and it now says its configured to run on
my computer.
Naturally I went straight to Word afterward,,,, no joy, sniff sniff.

The mmc file is the main catalog. If the catalog file is broken you will have
problems. You shouldn't have to reboot. The Gallery automatically rebuilds the
catalog.
If you get the Gallery to open, right-click any image in the catalog, click
recover.

I am still here Mary,
Just asking that you dont close-off the thread at your end as I
havent managed to do all you mentioned.
I am having some major comp' dramas eslewhere that need my
attention first.......... I can barely be online for more than a
minute or two, so getting into n/g's and responding to posts has
become a nightmare,,,,,,, please leave this conversation open.
