clipboard gets emptied when starting W 2002/XP

First time poster here.

I quite often want to edit a sentence using Word. When I copy the sentence
to the clipboard using Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Insert from my program (Refernce
Manager for instance), then open Word (2002/Office XP, 10.5815.4219 - SP2),
the clipboard is emptied, and I have to go bacl to the other application,
re-copy the phrase, and then pasting into Word works fine.

Why is Word emptying the clipboard, and how can I avoid this, other than
having Word open all the time?

Usually an add-in is responsible for clearing the Clipboard when you start
Word. The most notorious for this is the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for
Word. You say you have Office XP, but if you ever had Works Suite and
installed Office over it, (a) the version of Word you have is still the one
from Works Suite, since Office will not replace it, and (b) the add-in is
probably still installed. You can (and should) install it through Control
Panel | Add/Remove Programs (clearing the Clipboard is only one of its nasty
habits).

If the Works add-in is absolutely not a possibility, then look for another
add-in that might be responsible. See

I indeed had the Works suite before installing Office XP over it. Do I
understand correctly that I should uninstall Works suite and reinstall
Word over what I have now?

I uninstalled the Works suite word add-in, and that cured the problem.
Sorry for not quite understanding that at first.

Uninstalling the add-in will cure the current problem, but it would not be a
bad idea to uninstall Word (the Works Suite version) and reinstall it from
Office (no data will be lost, but it would be a good idea to back up
customizations; see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/FilesToBackup.htm). The reason for
this is that as long as you have Word from one application and the rest of
Office from another, there are two different CD keys involved/required. This
can cause problems whenever you want to apply patches and certainly if you
need to reinstall or add components. It's just simpler if you only have to
deal with one CD key.
