Clipboard - Items not collected.....

Win XP Pro - all service packs
Office XP - all service packs

Working with multiple documents, copying and pasting. The
clipboard always shows 'item collected 3 of 24, 4 of 24',
etc. Recently, it operates sporadically. Frequently,
instead of copying, it displays a message 'item not
collected', and if I click on the 'copy' icon several
times, finally, it will copy.... but not always... It
just shows a red circle with a diagonal line throught it
over the clipboard icon.
