I use word 97.I often cut and paste to one document. When
I start, the cutting and pasting is immediate, but as I
progress, it takes more and more time to complete the cut
and the paste. Any suggestions?

Michael;
Clipboard will store a lot of info. To clear it, type one letter and
copy that. Should help clean it out a bit. Hope this helps.

Word 97 only utilizes the Windows Clipboard and the Windows Clipboard
contents are cleared each time you cut or copy. :)

If you really want to clear the Clipboard then open the Clipboard
Viewer and delete the contents.

Hi Michael,

When you cut/paste between documents temp files are created. Try
deleting your temp files and see if that rectifies the problem.

- Exit Word and Outlook if you are using it as your email editor and
reboot your computer if you recently experienced a crash
- Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders (or Start/Search then select Files
or Folders)
- Change "Look in" to reflect the drive/folder to the root of your
Local drive.
- In the Named text box, type *.tmp
- Click the "Find Now" command
- Delete the temp files you find.

*Note that these can be deleted directly from the Find Results.

To group the files for a single deletion:
- Click any file in the list
- Press <Ctrl A> to select all

Should you encounter a "File in use" error, press <Ctrl> and click the
file to deselect it.

As an additional note, the Owner file is another temporary files Word
creates. If you have been experiencing multiple crashes or if Word has
been hanging on you then it is best to search for Owner files
(~$*.do?) and delete those as well. These can cause "file in use" and
"read only" errors.

For more information on this and a full cleanup/maintenance procedure
that should be run periodically, see this article:

Beth;
I am not having a problem like Michael, but I like to keep a clean
house. I religiously clean my tmp,chk and bak files. As well as prefetch
and TIF and cookies, etc. I never heard of Owner files. I did a search on
C ( my only HD) for (~$*.do?) and ~$*.do?, and found nothing.
Is that normal? Any advice will be appreciated.
Respectfully,
Wes

It's normal if Word is closed. Also, since these are hidden files, you won't
see them (or find them) if you haven't set your Folder Options to display
hidden files. For more on owner files, see “WD: How Word for Windows Uses
Temporary Files [KB 211632]” at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632

Any document you open directly from an email attachment will be saved in a
Temp folder and deleted when Word is closed; this is just one of several
reasons why it's risky to open attachments directly instead of saving them
to a document folder first.

Suzanne;
Thank you for your reply. Did a search for ~$*.do?, with Word open.
Found two files. I have found these before starting with the Tilde ~xxx.
In fact, I don't remember all the details, but a doc I was working on
somehow got saved as ~tmp or whatever and my program that deletes tmp files
on startup deleted it. So I watch how and where docs are saved.
The ~ files are showing up a lot lately, with OE's bug. ~ file is a
copy of the Address Book. It appears on half the people's Desktops. This
has everyone wondering if it is a virus or what. LOL
Anyway, thank you.
Respectfully,
Wes
