Closing a document in Word 97 takes 11 seconds!

My parents think I'm a computer guru since I've worked tech support for
years. But I've run into something that has me completely baffled.

On my mom's office work computer, when you bring up MS Word 97, and then
Open: file, and then just CLOSE the file, while leaving Word up (without
doing a THING do the file at all), it's now taking ELEVEN seconds for the
file to close! She says the problem started a month ago. I went thru all
the settings, and MS tech site, and I can't find anything to account for
this.

The office computer isn't connected to the internet; hasn't been connected
in years. Windows 98 OS. There is AVC anti-virus on there (virus defs from
2003). Pentium 3, 500 Mhz. Had 64 Mb Ram on it; they had another 64 Mb
sitting around that had been left by the guy who installed AVC a few years
back (they didn't want to power it down at the time for him to install it).
I installed it to get it to 128 Mb. Hard drive is 8 Gb free, and my mom was
able to defrag the drive 2 weeks ago. I tried setting the computer from
Network server, to Desk Computer, but that didn't do it. There is a modem
and a netword card installed; I tried disabling the network card (which
wasn't bound to TCP/IP anyway), but that didn't do anything.

I can't figure this out. I've told my mom to just kill Word, and bring it
up again. When you Quit Word, it closes instantly, no problems. Other than
re-installing Windows 98, Word, etc. all over again, I can't think of any
solutions to this. It annoys me that I can't figure out what is causing the
delay, especially since it has no reason to save the document when all
that's been done is Open it.
