Closing Excel 2000 depletes system resources

Running Office 2000 on a Windows 98 system

A few days ago, problem began where I close out Microsoft
Excel and the system locks up - when I try to do anything
else - including restart - I get a message that there
aren't enough system resources to execute the task- do I
want to quit application X. No matter how many
applications I force quit out of - including the explorer -
the only solution is to press the power button on the
machine. Did the repair option with the original CD,
problem persists.

what should I be looking at to fix this?

Try looking for a file called *.xlb (name changes with version but extension
doesn't). It's Excel's toolbar file and does funny things sometimes. If
you move it to another folder and see if the problem goes away. If it does,
Excel will create a new one and you can delete your old, any customisations
will be lost though.

If your problem doesn't go away you can just replace the file to it's
original position
