CMYK?

If I have set my products catalogue project in publisher to be output as CMYK
for printoffice machine purposes, does this override all inserted
jpg-pictures that are originally rgb-ones? Or must these pictures separately
be converted to CMYK before they are placed in my Publisher made catalogue?

Does this fact perhaps distort my printoffice persons analysis of the
produced pdf-file? This question as he says my pdf-file of the catalogue is
an rgb although I had made the setting as above!

What am I doing wrong here?

If you were printing composite it could have come out as CMYK or RGB
depending on how you configured the program that made the PDF. If you are
using Distiller then you could use something like Press Quality or PDF/X-1a.
But you would specifically have to configure those settings. By default the
settings are set to "standard" which makes everything RGB and 150dpi. So not
very good for printing purposes.

There are programs like PDF Enhancer from Apago that can fix this and take
care of a lot of problems that come from working with Office products for
printing. If you have Acrobat Pro (and you would if you have Distiller) then
there is another inexpensive program called Callas pdfColorConvert which can
handle all the RGB to CMYK conversions in a optimized way.

The biggest problem you, or your print service provider, will run into is
RGB blacks and grays being converted to CMYK. Typically what happens is that
the blacks and grays get converted to multi-colored black and three color
grays. This is particularly problematic for printers with type and lines as
well as fills that are supposed to be gray.
