"code" visible at end of saved document

Just recently Word X on my ibook has begun to insert almost a page of
crap at the end of each document I create. Usually looks like:

Normal
Default Paragraph Font
Default Paragraph Font
Jim Brett1Macintosh HD:Users:jim:Documents:RSMR:Laverty.doc

Often I see font names, the first line of type in the doc, etc.

When this happens certain characters in the text will also be changed,
e.g., a dash will become an upper case O with an accent over it, or a
quotation mark will become an accented upper case I.

Cleaning the document up and redaving as a Word doc doesn't help.
I've also tried saving the files in rtf format but that seems to insert a
huge wack of code before and throughout the text.

Any suggestions

Go to File/Open and change the "Enable" dropdown to Word Document (or
something other than "Recover Text from any file"). Open a file. That
should solve the problem. The "Recover Text" setting is sticky.

What you're seeing is always there in Word Docs (it's part of the
internal structure that Word uses), but it's usually hidden.
