codes appear inside document

Daughter using MS Word 8.0 on her computer; the "codes"
appear at the beginning and end of document as part of
the text e.g. "Page Default/ Page Default/ Times Roman/
etc."
How do I get rid of these?

Steve,

In the File Open dialog box, Files of Type window, change "Recover text from
any file" to All files, Word Docs, etc.
