Hello NG.

I use MS Project 2003 Professional and want to use the MS Project Workgroup
Handler. To do so I need to change the collaboration settings to "Email
only". But the drop down field "Collaborate using:" only shows MS Project
Server and None.

What do I have to do, to get the "Email only"?

Thank you in advance.
Sylvia

Once you got it to work, did you have any problems? I'm experiencing 2 when
I receive a reply to a "Request Progress Information" email (in which a user
enters the # of hours worked). When I click the "Update Project" button, 2
things happen. First, I receive a message "An import error occurred. Check
row x column -1". Second any actual hours that were stored are deleted and
the only ones that remain are the ones specified in the email.

Any ideas?

I also have problems to run with it. The exactly same problem which have been
discussed in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263444, except Microsoft
Outlook 2003. There is no explanation to overcome this trouble in this
article. I still can't open the file with extension .mxm or .mtm, and the
recipients I send this email can't find the file in their attachment. Anyone
has experiences?

So I've been searching through these questions now for quite some time and
was wondering, as a newbie to MS Project 2003, is there a feature that
automatically sends an email to the responsible party when it's time to begin
a task?

Hi Gobuffy1,

Project 2003 "out of the box" does not have this capability.

The posts you may have been looking at between Sylvia and I were most
likely about an add-in that is available for MS Project 2003 to enable
the workgroup mail features that were available in earlier releases
(2002 and before).

Once enabled, the workgroup message handler allows a project manager to
send assignments, assignment updates, and request tracking information
from resources. It is not "automatic" in the sense that the project
manager must still initiate the process.

For information on installation and configuration of the workgroup
message handler see:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818337/en-us

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Microsoft took out the workgroup capabilites in Microsoft Office Project.
They recommend that you use the Project Publisher add-in that allows you to
Publish and collaborate with team members through SharePoint. By using
SharePoint, team members can get alerts, and they can also use the Outlook
add-in to view and edit tasks status from directly from Outlook.

You can try the Project Publisher for free for 30 days.
