colon + carriage return = Mso9.dll errors

Gateway tablet PC
OS: XP with all patches.
Office 2000 (legal)

Has been great for a year. Today, after several hours of use, tried creating a letter, typed the date, a colon, hit <enter> and received the "You're tubed, but would you like to submit this to MS?" box. Reading the error details and looking in Event Viewer shows an Event ID 1000 (Mso9.dll version 9.0.0.2720, fault address 0x00242d23), and an Event ID 4097 (c0000005 at address 30B 02D23(Mso9! MsoFGetCursorLocation).

No new apps running, no new hardware. Problem doesn't occur in Word or Wordpad. Can save WordPad RTF and open in Word and do fine (so long as I don't enter a colon and carriage return). Tried replacing Normal.dot by renaming AND copying a good file, tried all the fixes I could locate in the MSKB, tried copying over a known-good Mso9.dll, tried repairing office and reinstalling office, but nothing has helped.

This system is not on the Internet, nor have any files been downloaded except MS, ZoneAlarm and PCCillin updates (which I update frequently every day).

What am I missing here?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

(PS: I posted this in General Word questions by mistake but don't know how to move it to this area --- sorry)

I suspect possibly a grammar checker error. Try turning off the
Automatically Check Grammar While You Type and test again.
