This is the most bizarre thing! I used the Microsoft Language Register app to add Japanese capability to Word 2008, and my colon key stopped working. I have a Japanese keyboard, and I can type neither the colon nor the asterisk. This limitation only applies to Word; Excel works just fine.
I have been opening TextEdit, typing a colon or asterisk, and copying and pasting it over every time I want to use either of those characters. Last night I deleted all of my preferences, together with the Microsoft User Data folder and Office applications, and did a fresh reinstall.... but that didn't work. Perhaps there's a preferences folder I missed? Any ideas?
