Color text from a function

I want to highlight problems in a report.
To this end I was planning to use the
TEXT(text, format) function to allow me to change the color
of the text. However, the color part of this function
appears not to work (e.g. =TEXT("123","[RED]###") gives
black text where the same format string in the FORMAT
CELLS menu would give red text.

How do I change the color of text from a function?
Ideally I would like to fill a cell with several colors of
text based on conditionals.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,
Not clear from your formula what you wanted.
If you have numbers you can easily format negative numbers
in Red. You can do other things some help
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/formula.htm#format
but they have to be numbers and that is not what question indicates.

But if it is text you probably want to use Conditional Formatting
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/condfmt.htm

I don't think you gave a clear idea of what you wanted, unless
you simply want to format the color of whatever the value is
select cell(s)
Format, patterns, select color
there is also a toolbar button to do this.
