the initial color?

Without knowing which version of Word you're using I can't tell you exactly
how to proceed, but it's simply a matter of selecting the text & changing
the font color. In 2003 & prior there is a font color button on the
Formatting toolbar or you can go to Format> Font to do so. If you have Word
2007 the font color button is on the Home Tab of the Ribbon in the Font
group. Click the triangle on the edge of the button to open a palette of
colors. BTW - you can also change the color _first_ then start typing.

I have Word 07. My document has question that have been formated with
questions and instructions as either green or orange and I would like to
enter my response in Black. Would I have to always choose Black from the
palette so that my entries are not green or orange? Or can I force a certain
color.

Well, without seeing the doc I can't rightly say - there are any number of
ways it could be put together. If there is space provided for the responses
you may only have to click 'n' type, as those areas may have been left
without color formatting. If not you'll have to format each response, which
isn't that big a deal. Simply get to where you want to enter your response &
set the font color to Automatic before you start to type - but you will have
to do so for each response.
