column graph in excel

I am trying to generate a column (or bar) graph with a dependent variable on
the y axis and an independent variable on the x axis. I would like points to
correspond with the values on the x axis, not be evenly spaced. Can this be
done in excel? If so, how? Thanks in advance for your help!

Maybe you could use an XY (Scatter) chart type, and add an error bar
extending from the point to the appropriate axis. But the error bar might be
too narrow for your needs.
