How can I make a label extend over 2 columns?

How can I make a label extend over 2 columns?
Just type in a cell. If there is nothing in the ceil to the right, the text
will flow into it.

Type the label over the first column. Highlight that column and the one to the left. Merge the two cells. Then align the label using centre alignment.

Enter the label in the left-most cell. Select that cell and the cell to
the right. Choose Format/Cell/Alignment, and choose Center Across
Selection from the Horizontal dropdown.

I generally advise against merging cells - it interferes with sorting,
copy/pasting, etc...

Center Across Selection has none of the disadvantages of merging.

Merging, IMNSHO, is almost never worth the disadvantages.

I hadn't considered the problems that merging could create when one wanted to work with the information. I was just thinking of a label and not the other possibilities.
