Column Promotion in a Document Library

Does Infopath perform column Promotion to a WSS Document Library?

We are putting our InfoPath data files (.xml) into a Wss document
library but we can not get the columns to automatically promote like
Word documents.

For Example if I have a Column Called "X" defined in the Document
library am I wrong to assume that if I have a node defined as "X" in
the .xml file, that the value would show in the Documnet library's "X"
column??

This works for word documents assuming that you create a custom
property called "X".

Does column promotion only take place in Form Libraries?

I know that I can get around this problem by Manually doing an Upload
to the document library and manually entering in the document
properties but we want to automate this task.

I know that this works with Form Libraries, but we are trying to
accomplish column promotion from within a Document Library.

Any thoughts on if this is possible?
