Column Titles

I am trying to figure out how to make my column names
appear on each page. I have tried the help function and
learned the following.............

To print row labels on every page, under Print titles in
the Columns to repeat at left box, enter the columns that
contain the row labels, and then click Print.

Based on these instructions and with my column titles
appearing in row 1, I am entering 1 and getting error
message. What am I doing wrong ?

Also, I understand that there is a way to "freeze" the
column titles so that they move down on the screen while
you are working so you know what column you are working
in, but I can't figure out how to accomplish this.

I think I am totally inept !

These instructions are for Excel 97 and should work for later versions
To freeze Row 1 activate cell a2
Goto Windows Menu > Freeze Pane

To freeze Column 1 activate cell b1
Goto Windows Menu > Freeze Pane


to freeze rows 1& 2 and column 1 activate cell b3

Goto Windows Menu > Freeze Pane

Note you can also use
Goto Windows Menu > Split



To print column headers on each page

File Menu > Page Setup > Sheet tab
Place cursor in Rows To Repeat At Top
Click on spreadsheet symbol at the right hand end of text box
Your spreadsheet is displayed - select row /rows required as headers b
clicking on the row numbe

Based on these instructions and with my column titles

appearing in row 1, I am entering 1 and getting error

Click File > Page Setup > Sheet tab
Try entering in "Rows to repeat at top:" box: $1:$1
(or better still, just click to put the cursor inside the box,
then click outside on any cell in row1 - same result)
Click OK

Also, I understand that there is a way to "freeze" the

Try this:
Click on A2
Click Window > Freeze Panes

This will enable the column titles in row1
to remain visible as you scroll down

(To unfreeze, Click Window > Unfreeze Panes)

And if you click on B2 instead of A2 and then Window > Freeze Panes
this'll freeze row1 as you scroll down, and freeze col A as you scroll
across

Hi Sandy,

You're not inept. Just new to these functions!

Try:
File > Page Setup > Sheet and choose "Rows to repeat at top" b
clicking the icon at the right hand side of the field. This will the
change to show just an input box with the title Page Setup - Rows t
repeat at top and a blank field under. Use your mouse to left click o
the row number(s) you want to see at the top of each page. The rows yo
want will be highlighted with a flashing broken line and the ro
information will appear in the field of the input box. Click on th
icon in the input box to return to the Sheet tab and click OK. Have
look at the print preview to see the rows displayed at the top of eac
page.
Alternatively, you can type directly into the field the following
$1:$1 for just the first row or $1:$2 for the first 2 rows or $2:$2 i
you want just the second row, etc.

To freeze the panes (from Excel 97 Help):
1. To freeze the top horizontal pane, select the row below where yo
want the split to appear.
To freeze the left vertical pane, select the column to the right o
where you want the split to appear.
To freeze both the upper and left panes, click the cell below and t
the right of where you want the split to appear.

2. On the Window menu, click Freeze Panes.
