Column view default in Word 2004

In Word 2004, on Leopard machine-the user goes>file>Open...> and the Open dialog opens in column view with endless columns that extend off the screen. When you try to shrink the dialog down to size Word stalls with the rotating beach-ball. How can we change her preferences or repair Word?

Hi Roy,

The Open dialog is a function of the OS, not Word, but whatever is wrong
there is messing up Word. First thing to try is a restart of your computer.
Next, repair permissions (<http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DiskIssues.html>). If
you're still having trouble, contact Apple for help with the Open dialog.
When you get that sorted out, come back here if Word is still misbehaving.
