Column width change in large spreadsheet

I have a large spreadsheet with formulae connecting cells. I am required to reduce the column widths of a range of cells halfway down the spreadsheet. I cannot allow the whole column to change. How do I do this?

Heather, you can not change part of a column, your only option would be to
merge the cells for part of the column, but be aware that this option can
cause problems when you want to sort, copy and pastes and other things.

Width is a property of the entire column and cannot be altered.

One work-around is to use the "center across selection" feature.
