Column width changes when opening older versions of Excel

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.0 (Cheetah)

When I open an older version of Excel in the 2008 version, all of my column widths in the older version are lost. How do I preserve the formatting of older versions of Excel that I open in Excel 2008?

Sorry, Herm, but before anyone can even hazard a guess you're going to have
to explain how you're managing to run Mac Office 2008 on OS X 10.0... The
minimum requirement is Tiger 10.4.9 so if you've somehow managed to even
install - let alone launch - 2008 it could easily account for all kinds of
misbehavior.
