column widths

Using Excel97
Sometimes when I do a calculation that produces a result
too large for the column width, Excel automaticaly makes
the clumn wider.
Sometimes, I get a ******* (until I manually make the
column wider.

How does Excel decide when it is going to automatically
widen the column?

Not terribly important. Just curious

Sanford,

I think that if you have previously changed the column
width, then it is 'fixed' where you set it. If you
haven't adjusted it before, it automatically changes.

Excel automatically widens a column only when you manually make an entry (if
needed, and only if the column width has not been manually set). Excel
never widens a column when a formula returns a longer result.
