column's grid behavior

hi all,

office 2003 sp2 and wxp pro sp2,

when i'm typing inside a cell witihin a table, sometimes when i hit the
right margin of the particular column, the column would moves to the right to
accomodate the text rather than the text itself warping around the next line
below. other times it is just the reverse i.e. when i reach the the column
grid on the right, automatically i am warped to the line below?

any explanations and work-around to enforce consistent behavior of this
particular table's properties i.e. so that it either fixed the grid so that
my text warp around to the next line or it keep pushing the grid (assuming
english language usage where words are type left to right).

On the Table menu, click Table Properties. Click the Table tab. Click
Options, clear the "Automatically resize to fit contents" option and
click OK twice.

thanks stefan! i am surprised that microsoft did not set an initial default
behaviour i.e. either behaviour seems to occur randomly in my case.

Glad I could help.

To create tables whose columns don't automatically resize, you would
have to use an AutoText entry, created from an existing table (which
has the "Automatically resize..." option turned off).

In order to turn "Automatically resize..." off for all existing tables
in a document, you would need a macro.

hi stefan,

thanks again for your furhter explanation. i am not too bothered whether it
is fixed or not but just surprise that it did not behave (seemingly) in a
consistent manner. otherwise occasionally it is an annoyance but overall it
did not affect my work.
