Columns in subreport

I can't make this work. I want my main report to have 1 column and the
subreport to have 5. When I set the number of columns for the subreport to 5,
the number of columns for the main report also changes to 5.

What am I doing wrong?

Design your main report so it runs correctly without the sub report.
Design your sub report so it runs correctly by itself.
Open main report in design mode.
Split screen so it tiles vertically.
Drag the sub report into the report footer of the main report.

Thank you. That worked.

I also discovered that to change the number of columns in a subreport, you
can open the subreport from the main report in a new window, make
adjustments, save, and close to go back to the main form.
