columns in word

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) I set it up so there are two columns and i checked the box that says show line.. there is no line and i can't switch to type in the other column.. help?

Those kind of columns are "snaking columns", where you have to fill up
the first column before you can type in the second column. So for
example, if you press and hold the enter key, eventually the insertion
point will reach the second column, and the line will then appear. Or
you can use Insert->Break->Column break to "reach" the next column.

If you want columns that are "side-by-side", you may be better off
creating and formatting a a table with two columns.

.... And the line between columns doesn't appear until the content snakes to
the second column.

I mentioned "the line will then appear" in my original response. I
suppose even the OP might find less than clear. If I've somehow managed
to mention it somewhere findable on my tips site I really would be
astonished!

By golly, on closer examination, so you did :)

At this point I'd strongly advise against getting old but the only
alternative is far less acceptable.
