columns should be lettered???

I seem to have a problem with my worksheets and as an
inexperienced excel user I am confused. I am pretty sure
that the columns should be lettered and the rows should be
numbered. Both columns and rows are numbered on my work
sheets. No letters on the columns. How can this be????
