I've posted the following question in the "excel.charting" newsgroup, but
haven't gotten a response, so I'm wondering whether it isn't really a
"charting" question, but is instead a problem that requires me to
recalculate my data before drawing a chart.
I'm trying to create a chart that will automatically combine into one column
what are now several columns when displayed in an ordinary column chart.
The columns I want to combine all have the same value on the X-axis, but are
shown (in an ordinary chart) as separate columns because they have different
values along the Y-axis.
Is there any way to create a chart that will automatically add together the
Y-axis values and then display the results in a single column?
I've recalculated my data "by hand" -- by adding manually together the
values along the Y-axis (of the separate columns on the X-axis) -- and then
I've created the kind of chart I'm looking for by using the
manually-calculated sum.
But I'm wondering whether there's a way to tell Excel itself to look for
data that have the same value, and to automatically add those data points
together.
The chart that I'm trying to create is one that displays the results of a
decision tree analysis. Those results show, for example, five possible
outcomes, each of which has
- a value of $1 million and a probability of 10%
- a value of $250,000 and a probability of 25%
- a value of $0 and a probability of 50%
- a value of $0 and a probability of 10%
- a value of $0 and a probability of 5%
I want a column chart that shows
- a value of $1 million and a probability of 10%
- a value of $250,000 and a probability of 25%
- a value of $0 and a probability of 65% (instead of three separate columns
of probabilities for $0)
Can Excel do this, automatically?
