Combine multiple records into one record

Greetings.

I have a report with subreports, that displays multiple
child records for the displayed parent record. These child
records - which contain only one field - display in a
column. But for records with lots of child records, this
column is taking up too much space on the report. My
client would like these record values to display as a
string of values separated by commas instead. Is there a
way to do this - to render multiple records as a connected
string of values separated my commas?
