combine two cells and keep data

I have two cells, one a date (dd/mm/yyyy) and the other a time
(hh:mm). I have a third column that combines the two cells using the
forumla =A1&" "&B1.

This thrid column however displays a number e.g. 39217
0.425694444444444 instead the combination of the date and time from
cells A1 and B1. I tried changing the format of this cell to custom dd/
mm/yyy hh:mm but it still displays the number.

All I want it to do is show 15/05/2006 10:13 i.e. the data from both
cells.

Any suggestions?

Use + to add the time value to your initial date:
=A1+B1
