Combining 2008 Home Edition with separate Entourage download

E

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: Exchange

I have a hosted Exchange environment, and the company I host with provides a free download of Entourage 2008 as part of the services I receive for hosting with them (they also allow a free download of Outlook 2007). I have Macs running Office 2008 Home edition and I want to know how to successfully combine the free download of Entourage 2008 (with Exchange support) with the Office 2008 Home edition, which doesn't allow that. There seems to be a conflict when I try to do this, as the Home edition seems to want to convert the full Entourage into a limited version. Does anyone know how to go about this?

This has never come up before. You would have to consult Microsoft or your
provider for help.

Technically, using the Home edition in a work environment is a violation of
the license.

"Limitations on Use. The software is not licensed for use in any commercial, non-profit or revenue-generating business activities."

Right you are. And here's a great example of how these license agreements are a bit goofy: a person who runs a small business out of their home would be technically using the software incorrectly based on the license. However, most people in such a situation are not using an Exchange server, which is the main differentiating feature between the editions, and is likely to pick the Home edition not knowing any better.

My hosting company won't support the installation of Entourage - they just offer it as a bonus on their service.

I am unfamiliar with standalone versions ofEntourageso not sure what to
offer as a suggestion other than update. Get the standard version upgrade
for $199.99.

I have the same problem as the original poster. We use a hosted
exchange provider for our family's email which provides a free version
of Entourage 2008 for each user. The software works perfectly (with
Exchange) if I install it before I install Office 2008 Home and
Student edition. This is a licensed version of Entourage with its own
product license.

When I then try and install Office 2008 Home and Student edition (even
by doing a custom install so as not to install Entourage from the
Office disk), nothing works after the install.

This is not a licensing issue. I have two valid licenses - one for
Entourage and one for Office Home and Student edition. And, I am
using this in my home (for non-commercial purposes) and for my kids
who are students.

So how do you install these on the same machine? My next step is
Microsoft support, but if someone has found a solution, I'd appreciate
it.

Your best bet is calling Microsoft. I'll see what I can find out, but my
contact is on vacation so it will be quite some time before I could find out
anything.

Well let me say I agree that just because you use entourage doesnt mean you
are using it for a business. I have been using exchange for personal use for
over 3 years now.

If you want t work around I posted a lengthy blog here
http://nathanhmiller.blogspot.com/

Can't 100% say it will work for you, but I did it for 3 different clients.

IT IS NOT SUPPORTED BY MS. Read the bottom of my blog for their side of the
story.

Hope this helps.

King Regards,

Nathan

Ah yes and it does work most of the time, so great job on that. But for what
its worth it didn't always work for me.

I appended it to my blog here, with some additions that I felt were valuable
to know.

And it still stands MS Support will not help you fix this (According to the
2 techs I talked to). Their position is you need to call an 800 number get
issued a refund and you need to purchase Office 2008 Standard which is an
additional 250 US.

It's a weird situation that's for sure. I can see both sides. As more people
use Exchange for personal use, I hope they find a way to accommodate users
from both sides.
