Combining layers

I am new to Visio and I have a question.

What steps do I take to copy items from one layer into a new layer with the
new layer's color characteristics? Can I also combine two layers into the new
layer?

Select the shapes you want and choose Format > Layer. Then check the layer
you want to assign these shapes to. If you want to remove them from their
previous layer, uncheck those boxes.
