Combining Multiple MS Project

B

beas

I have three MS projects that I want to combine into one. There will be need
to be tasks that are dependent from the three different files. Copying
hasn't worked and inserting into a master doesn't seem to allow adding task
and linking.

When you insert into the master project, pay attention to the checkbox which
says "Link to Project". If it is checked, then the master project is just a
shell holding three sub-projects. If it is not checked then the master
project will combine all the tasks. It sounds like the unchecked option is
what you want.

I want to do something similar in MS Project 2007 but I did not see
the Link to Project check box. Can you tell me where it is?

Hello Joanna,

I don't have 2007 available currently, but a "link" or "link to
project" should appear in the lower portion of the Insert Project
dialog box.

If you double click on the inserted project in the master, that
should show the Inserted Project Information dialog box -- on the
Advanced tab is also the checkbox to remove the link.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I found it. Now I have a new issue. I am attempting to consolidate multiple
projects into one project going forward. These project have linked tasks
between them. I was hoping MS Project would remove the path link and resolve
directly to the linked task in the new consolidated project. However, when I
look at the predecessor and successor I still see the path to the former sub
project. Is there anyway to resolve this and link directly to the new task
line?

Thank you

Hello Joanna,

Sorry, no. The entire path will appear. There will be multiple
tasks with the same IDs, so to identify the predecessor/successor
relationship completely, the entire path must be there.

If you initially inserted the projects without the link, the
predecessor/successor will just show the ID from the consolidated
project file.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
