Combobox list appears on far left side of screen

If I have a Combobox to the left of the vertical Freeze Panes dividing
line, the list for the Combobox appears on the far left side of the
screen, though the top part of the Combobox (the edit box and dropdown
arrow) appears in the correct location. Looks very weird.

I'm using Excel 2007 SP1, and I see the same problem in 2003 and 2002.

Is there any fix other than not having a Combobox to the left of the
Freeze Panes dividing line?

I've noticed that sometimes the problem does NOT occur, with the very
same Combobox -- and the same worksheet, same panes, same Excel
version, etc. -- that sometimes shows the problem. I'd like to figure
out what the steps are that make it behave correctly, so that maybe I
can do those steps for the user when e.g. the affected sheet is
activated.

But I haven't been able to find the steps that make it behave
correctly; I've only observed it occasionally happen randomly. Any
ideas what the steps are?

BTW, I do understand that the problem does not occur if you unfreeze
the panes but leave the unfrozen panes divider in place. But we don't
want to do that because it can confuse relatively new users.
