command "close" OR "close all"

Un-knowingly, somehow I changed a crucial item, and now
cannot find how to fix same.

I like to keep more than one document open in Word,
....since I need to go back & forth between them.

However, when I close a document,
....the system closes
...all open documents.

It looks like the icon for "close" and "close all" is the
same. I cannot figure this out when I look at the
buttons on the toolbars.

Word XP

Thanks for your help

There are two "x" icons in the top-right of the Word
windows. The outermost one closes all Word documents, but
the inner one will just close the current document. It's a
bit confusing because both "x"'s are so similar.

It pays to learn the keyboard shortcuts. Alt-F+C (File ->
Close) closes the current file. Alt-Space+C (same as
clicking on top-left window icon) will shut down Word and
all documents.

I didn't explain properly my problem:

What happens is this:

If I click "alt O" to open a document,
the system closes the document that is already open.

I did not click on "close" or the red X to close the
existing document.

The system closes it without my asking it to do so.

This happens when I click "Alt O" or "alt f" "open" or
the "icon" manila envelope for "open"

Thanks again
