Command S

Hey everyone, so i've been pouring through the internet for a few hours trying to solve this problem.

For some reason, the Command S (save) feature will not work in Microsoft Word 2008 for me. I am running Snow Leopard on a Macbook Air.

As a side note : Command P (print) works fine, and when I go to the file menu , the drop down list does display "Command S" next to Save - but when I press it, it still doesnt work. I re-installed Office and did all of the updates. Any advice??

My first piece of advice would be "Never re-install on a Mac. It never
fixes anything, and usually makes the problem worse."

Generally the problems on the Mac affect the Preference files. Those files
are not on the CD, so they are not touched by a re-install. But if the
software on the hard disk does not match the entries in the preference
files, the problems will get worse.

When you say "Command + s will not work" ‹ that could mean it "does nothing
at all" or it could mean that "an error dialog appears".

If it is the former, hunt around in System Preferences>Keyboard>Kewyboard
Shortcuts>Application Shortcuts to make sure some other application has not
stolen it. See here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8557.html

If it's an error dialog, we need to know which one.

Hope this helps

Hey John,

Thanks for the reply.

There is no error message, and I have checked the keyboard shortcuts per your advice. There is no application stealing the Command +S function. To put it simply, in Word, When I press Command + S, nothing happens.

I think I've made some headway with this issue. I noticed this when I go to "Customize Keyboard" In the tools menu of Word ...

I attempted to remove the "Command S" function that is assigned to Save and re-assign it...

When I try to re-assign it I press Command S and it comes up as Command C!

I'm ABSOLUTELY positive that i'm not making a typo. Everytime I put Command S in the Assign Menu it comes up as Command C (with a message that Command C is already assigned to "Copy")

Any bit of advice on this one at all...? Feels like twilight zone.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it¹s your User¹s folder that contains the problem.

If it fails in the new User, you can run the Snow Leopard installer over
your current install like a combo updater. Be sure you are updated to
10.6.1.

If it works in the new User, then it's a problem in your User's folder.

1) Log out/in holding down shift key. Test. If the problem goes away it's a
login item.

2) Clear out caches using one of the utilities like Snow Leopard Cache
cleaner.

3) Test your preferences.

I've seen one other report on this so you aren't alone.

Try Diane's suggestion:

Mac OS X maintains a list of key combinations and their associated commands
in a plist, but I have not found out much about it.

Cheers

Hey I fixed the problem!
So I tried all of the above, and none of it worked. I became super frustrated and just starting searching through all of the settings... then it hit me. A while back I was fascinate with the Speech function in Snow Leopard and assigned Command S to that function. I totally forgout about this as my little fascination only lasted about 5 minutes. Anyway, this assignment does not show up in shortcuts and you sort of have to hunt down something like this yourself.

Thanks so much Diane and John for your help. Sorry to waste your time guys.

No problems! I am interested in the fact that it allowed you to re-assign
Command + s ‹ that's one of the most sacred of the Finder's shortcuts :)

Cheers
