Comment characters not showing properly

When a comment is added - in the pop up box I get _ instead of
accented characters or inverted commas. There must be an easy way
round this in the settings.

Comments at the foot of the page (when "view comments" is selected)
appear quite normally

I have a similar problem when using accents in cross-platform environments.
This happens consistently if I have a Power Point slide with text that has
an accent and copy it to Word as picture (paste special/picture). When this
file is opened in Windows, the accents appear as _.

I think this should be related to the character set that the OSX / Office /
Windows are using, but have no idea how to fix it.

REF: I use Mac OS X and Office 2004 (Word version 11.1)

Any help is appreciated.
