Yep.
I can reproduce that bug here.

In fact delete selected text does not work in the reviewing panel
regardless of how it is opened. What a crock!!

As a feeble workaround (and *not* for encouraging the lack-of-testing
department it Mac BU to sit back for more than a nanosecond)...
I found I could *usually* cut selected text in the reviewing panel, but
not delete it. The cursor moves to the beginning of the selection and
the selection becomes unhighlit whenever I try.
I found I could delete words in the reviewing panel (opt-delete), which
is slightly quicker than single character delete.

From this and the other bugs I reported here a couple of days ago, I'd
declare the reviewing panel completely broken and not fit for purpose.

Would you report the bug to Microsoft? I'll try to fight my way through
their execrable bug reporting web page too. Let's make like squeaky
wheels.

(I had to give up trying to log feedback. I suspect MS support has been
tanked by Sober-Z this evening if the news stories are for real.)

Beth, John, Clive? somebody?? Do you have a way of bringing this bug to
MS attention?

How did they ever let it out the door is what I want to know.

Ah, the horrible horrible reviewing pane.

"typing replaces selection" does not seem to work in the reviewing pane.
Neither does autocorrect--and possibly some other editing features that I
can't remember right now. It's completely freakin' unusable.

I didn't actually concentrate on that post, but will go back and review it.
I agree. I gave up on the reviewing pane a while back.

Huh?

Yes, we'll call attention to it too.

Well, I can speculate that it got out the door because they were so busy
installing the new balloon features that they forgot to make sure the old
way worked.

Yep, see my Take Control ebook on Word 2004, which warns of this (p.
62):
Both editor Caroline Rose and I, in the course of working on this
book, experienced a bug where, in editing an existing comment in
the Reviewing Pane, Word would resist any attempt to delete text
by selecting and then typing or deleting—as if the "Typing replaces
selection" checkbox in Word's Edit preference pane were off for
comments. One (tedious) workaround is to delete backwards one
character at a time from the insertion point; another is to use Edit >
Cut instead of the Delete key. Other problems with editing comments
in the Reviewing Pane are that autocorrection and drag-and-drop
don't work. Also, members of the Take Control team have seen the
Reviewing Pane display "go crazy" at various times, rendering it
momentarily unusable.

Lots of other bugs with the related stuff are noted as well.
