Comment windows won't close

I inserted a comment in a cell, and it worked as expected. Then I
changed my mind and cleared the comment from that cell, intending to
re-do the comment on a nearby cell.

But when I then inserted the comment in the new cell, the comment
window would not close when I moved the cursor elsewhere and
clicked. I had to undo the insert to get rid of the comment window.

I haveclosed and restarted, no joy on the either a completely new
workbook or the original workbook where the problem started.

I dragged Excel to the trash and re-installed it, still no joy.

So I am asking, Can anyone help me get the comment window working
again?

Thanks, Carl

You don't say which version you're using, but there are a couple of
generic things to check.

1) There's a global setting for whether checkboxes should be
displayed or hidden (with a red triangle indicator) that you can
toggle in the View menu (View/Comments). You can also toggle this
behavior from the "Show/Hide All Comments" button on the Reviewing
toolbar.

2) Each comment can be set to show/hide individually. CTRL-click the
cell with the comment and choose Hide/Show Comment. Or click the
Hide/Show Comment toggle button on the Reviewing toolbar.

3) The default behavior is set in Preferences/View where you can set
the display to both Comments and Indicator (comments always show),
Indicator only (red triangle in cell, comment pops up on hover), or
None (no triangle, no pop-up).

Finally, you should *not* uninstall/reinstall Office
applications/components by dragging to the trash and reinstalling.
Office has a vast array of supporting files, some visible, some
hidden. For Office 98/01, download the remove office utility from

MacTopia Downloads
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

For Office v.X, use the Remove Office application that comes in the
Value Pack folder of the Instal disk. (It's unlikely that the XL
application itself is a problem)

Oh, Thank you ! The Hide All Comments button on the Reviewing
Toolbar did the trick. Thanks again! Regards, Carl
