My question is about comments: whenever I place one in a
document, it prints; when I tell Word to hide it, there's
no indication as to where it is, such as occurred in Word
Perfect.

Is there any way to hide a comment, such as extraneous
instructions about the format of a certain document, and
make sure that the next time I open it, Word will indicate
that there's a comment within.

In order to prevent comments from printing, you must
deselect that option on the Print tab of Tools>Options.
You can still display comments onscreen if you have the
option to show hidden text selected on the View tab of
Tools>Options.

Hidden text is deselected in the print tab, and is
selected on the view tab, and comments are still printing.

I'm using Word 2000, and what I need to use this for is
for instructions on how to set up a certain file, or for
notes to myself on different aspects of a certain
document. Sometimes when I create a file, I like to remind
myself of certain points related to it, and a comment
seems like a good way to do it, at least that was the case
in Word Perfect.

Are comments printing instead of document text? Then you
need to select File>Print and select the option to print
the current document, rather than comments.

It was printing both the text and the comment. But I did
do as you suggested, and went to file, print, and
chose "document" under "print what", rather than "document
showing markup", and just the text printed, not the
comment.

In Word 2002 and above, if the markup is displayed onscreen, then "Document
showing markup" is the default setting for printing. You have to select
Original or Final (rather than Original Showing Markup or Final Showing
Markup) before printing in order not to print the markup.

Thanks for the extra info. Since Word 2000 is more than
enough of a hassle for me, I'm hoping I won't have to
tackle 2002 and above for a while.
