Comments in the margins

I'd like to be able to add small printable comments to the margins of
my documents. I'm not talking about the "Comments" function that Word
uses for collaborative editing - I'd literally like to be able to
insert explanatory text on the side. Any ideas?

What about using a text box? Create the box with the drawing toolbar, then
add text to the box.

The problem with textboxes is that they're really hard to place
consistently. There doesn't seem to be a way to format its position
relative to the page or paragraph.

Have you tried right-clicking on the text box? In the Format Textbox dialog
box, go to the Layout tab, then select Advanced. There are settings to
position the box exactly. You can also do this same thing with a rectangle
from the drawing toolbar.

Try a two column, one row table, with borders turned off? Or as many rows as
you need, to keep comments with sections...
