Comments in Word 2003 selecting word erroneously

In Word 2000, when I insert a comment, a marker appears at the insertion
point. In Word 2003, when I insert a comment, it selects the word prior to
the insertion point. Can I change this so it just inserts a marker?

Have the space between the word and the following word selected when you
insert the comment and then it will be the spaced that is marked for the
comment.
