Compact and repair on exit - Conditional?

Is there any way to control this? I only want it to work once a day, reason
is that if the database is being used locally its fine (although i am not
sure what happens if two people have the database open at the same time over
a shared drive on the network). Problem is when i access the database remotly
across our WAN, then the last thing i want to do is compact it, it takes for
ever.
